Martha Wood was a community activist who opposed unfair practices of the City Housing Authority and the Anne Arundel County Board of Education against African-Americans in the 1970's and 1980's. A wife and mother who raised her three daughters in the College Creek Terrace community, Ms. Wood filed federal complaints that led to the institution of new student discipline standards and the removal of a Housing Authority director. Her activist work also spurred property owners to clean up housing and reduce crime. Truly, Ms. Wood was a leader in the public housing community!
The Housing Authority and the City of Annapolis will present the Martha Wood Leadership Award monthly to an individual whose actions clearly point to the recipient's desire to make our communities and our residents better!
